Downfall of Palm continues - Windows Mobile to blame? December 02, 2008 [Pocket PC phone] | By Edward J. R. Palm has just announced their latest financial results, combined with plans to fire many employees. Interestingly Palm blames their poor results on "reduced demand for smartphones" (apparently nobody told Apple about this reduced demand as sales of iPhone grow): The revenue decline vs. the company's Q1 fiscal year 2009 and Q2 fiscal year 2008 is a result of reduced demand for maturing smartphone and handheld products. ... The company is currently implementing several cost-savings initiatives, including reducing its U.S. work force, consolidating its European operations, and shifting responsibility for Asia Pacific sales, marketing and administrative support to its U.S. offices. Surely, why not, certainly if Windows Mobile would support multi-touch then Palm would have much higher sales... however by now Palm has failed to deliver their new OS (new Palm OS - Nova) and their latest phones are mediocre so maybe they should fire their CEO and they should go back to the drawing board? Palm started using Windows Mobile because new Palm OS produced by Access company was too bad and their own progress with new OS was too slow - even though official justification was to "reach out to enteprise market". Now however new OS from Palm is still not ready and some people even doubt, that it is wise move to release another Linux Mobile while Google Empire already offers such mobile OS - Google Android. However getting operating system from Microsoft, hardware from HTC, and placing a "Palm" sticker on it, is not enough in current tough smartphone market...
