What to expect at CES 2009 + what to expect at Mobile World Congress 2009
December 31, 2008 [General] | By Edward J. R.
CES 2009 and MWC 2009 (Mobile World Congress 2009) are next major events, where some announcements related to Microsoft mobility are expected.
(on photo above - taken by our reporter: hotel in which Microsoft's press conference takes place each year during Mobile World Congress event)
Here we are reporting about latest rumors plus latest information (not rumors):
- CES 2009 - January 8-11, Las Vegas, USA ; following things are expected:
- (rumor) first official info about Project Pink aka Zune services, or Zune phone - while previously we were thinking that Microsoft denied, that anything in this area will be mentioned at CES 2009, several reliable sources are now claiming that indeed it will happen! Since Zune (Microsoft's media player device) is available only in USA, it could be that Zune services extension will be also unveiled in USA and since the only next major event in USA is CES, the likelihood of using CES for this announcement is quite high!
- (certain) Windows 7, i.e. successor to Windows Vista, that is going on sale in second half of 2009. While Windows Vista is too clanky to run smoothly on netbooks, the Windows 7 is designed to work fast also in netbooks
- Mobile World Congress - February 16-19, Barcelona, EU ; following things are expected:
- (not a rumor, confirmed to us by James Blamey from Microsoft) Microsoft press conference at 3pm local time, on February 16 - in a conference room of Catalonia Barcelona Plaza hotel
- (rumor) first sighting of Windows Mobile 6.5 - first version of Windows Mobile with finger-friendly user interface for devices with touch-screen
- (certain) official release of Windows Mobile 6.1.4 (the one with Internet Explorer Mobile 6) and more announcements related to Internet Explorer Mobile 6
- (rumor) Skymarket - the app store for Windows Mobile
Note: while we are not visiting CES 2009 as it is mainly a consumer event (mostly devoted to HD TV, gaming consoles, consumer personal computers), not mobility event, we will be present however at Mobile World Congress 2009 (the biggest most important event about mobile phones in the world) - 3 days: 15-16-17 February, so stay tuned for first hand reports!
