msmobiles.com launches new news category: Wi-Fi / 802.11 June 03, 2003 [Wireless (Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, ...)] | By anonymous 1.
(photo of Wi-Fi card in SD form factor produced by Socket Communications and running inside of the Pocket PC, that we have taken during CeBIT 2003; the same card, after driver updates will work also with MS Smartphones) While still focusing on CELL PHONES powered by Microsoft software in general, and on MS Smarpthone in particular, new news category entitled "Wi-Fi / 802.11" has been added to msmobiles.com, category that will cover topics related to Microsoft powered devices with Wi-Fi (also known as "WLAN", "802.11b", "802.11", etc). This summer first low power Wi-Fi cards in SD form factor and compatible with SDIO standard (standard supported also in all MS Smartphones) will become available commercially! On top of that several Pocket PC based PDAs already have built-in Wi-Fi and solutions, that integrate both cell phone and Wi-Fi in one device are coming soon too (like a reference design, powered by Pocket PC software, and code named "WANDA"). New bright future awaits us, where cell phones and wireless Wi-Fi networks will converge and where voice over IP technologies will make it possible to make also voice calls over Wi-Fi networks. Number of Wi-Fi hotspots grows rapidly on the worldwide scale and new wireless LAN technologies and ideas will spawn new services and become real danger (and completion) to cellular networks. While Bluetooth is just a short range "wireless cable replacement", the Wi-Fi constitutes real breakthrough in way of thinking about mobile networking. We will be covering Bluetooth but only within remaining categories, by the way of topics related to these remaining categories. As far as Wi-Fi is concerned msmobiles.com staff has many years of experience with this technology, started at times when the most popular name for this technology was "WLAN" (Wireless LAN) and nobody then heard of "Wi-Fi" yet. Instead of waiting for the end of this cell phone / Wi-Fi convergence we decided to start covering Wi-Fi already now. Microsoft has strong commitment to the Wi-Fi technologies across all platforms, but we will be covering here mainly Wi-Fi support in Smartphones, Pocket PCs and devices based on Windows CE .NET .
