Cooperation with Nokia does not pay off: UIQ goes bankrupt
January 07, 2009 [General] | By Edward J. R.

The bottom line is this:
  • if you are a consumer, then get Windows Mobile phone, Google Android phone or Apple iPhone
  • if you are a manufacturer of mobile phones, then license Windows Mobile OS (it's not free, but you get support and Microsoft's help in marketing, etc.) or use Google Android (it's free)
... but Symbian (a puppet of Nokia): don't touch with a barge pole!

(on photo above: Johan Sandberg - CEO of UIQ during an interview about UIQ that he gave us!)

UIQ was a company owned jointly by Sony Ericsson and Motorola, and it was based on Nokia owned Symbian similarly like Windows Mobile is based on Windows CE. However cooperation with Nokia never pays off in long-term so UIQ just went bankrupt:

UIQ is based in Sweden, the home country of magnificent Abba, and during interview with CEO of UIQ we experienced how nice and cultured Swedish staff of UIQ is. Unfortunately their mistake was using Nokia's puppet - Symbian - as basis of their platform. UIQ has just filed for bankruptcy. It is over.

Clearly the Google Android will gain importance in the context of both Motorola and Sony Ericsson dumping Symbian-based UIQ. Android will most likely within 2 years or so clearly stand out as the biggest competitor of Windows Mobile and as tree-hugging free software advocats say: with Open Source, Java, AND Google you simply can't go wrong! Windows Mobile still has chances though - as a balance for upcoming huge power of Google Android - particularly because Apple is not licensing iPhone OS to other manufacturers and their main choices are: Google Android, Windows Mobile, Palm Nova, and the worst choice of them all: Symbian. Symbian Foundation however will be a total fiasco! ... and our suggestion to manufacturers is crystal clear: please make smartphones that run both Windows Mobile and Google Android - it is doeable as some manufacturers already have proven. Now any doubt that Symbian is just a puppet of Nokia that serves only Nokia and nobody else - is gone. Now clarity is total and there are no doubts whatsoever that using Nokia's Symbian is equal to suicide and squandering of resources.
