Mobile World Congress 2009: February 16, 2009 - the day when Windows Mobile died February 15, 2009 [General] | By Edward J. R. Tomorrow, on February 16, 2009, Windows Mobile will be no more! What will happen? Just take a look at this photo:
On photo above you can see entry to the hotel where Microsoft will be holding press conference tomorrow (a day when Mobile World Congress 2009 starts in Barcelona, EU). As you can see, there is no more "Windows Mobile" branding that was there each year, but instead just "Windows" branding! Also other advertisements of Microsoft all over Barcelona are featuring Windows only, no Windows Mobile anymore:
Source of photos: Windows Mobile dev team. Conclusion: it looks like rumors about Microsoft giving up on "Windows Mobile" branding and versioning and instead using only "Windows" brand - are true. Obviously users still would like to know what version given phone has and it is yet to be seen whether in fact Microsoft wants to obfuscate Windows Mobile versions by renaming it to "Windows" (or "Windows Phone") only. Historically Windows Mobile phones had many names, including Windows CE, Pocket PC, Smartphone, and it might be good to have just one name both for phones and desktop computers, but we hope that version numbers will not be obfuscated, hidden, by this move... Note also: all those people who have "wm" in domain names of their web sites are in trouble, because soon nobody will know what "wm" is! In our case it is not an issue at all, as we cover all mobile phones from Microsoft - "msmobiles.com"... Note 2: we are missing in action for Mobile World Congress 2009, because our reporter has lost passport shortly before departure to Barcelona. We have been present at this event, sometimes with 2 people, for many years, and it is first time we are missing.
