Netbooks powered by Windows Mobile are coming soon ! February 26, 2009 [mobile PCs (Tablet PC, mini-PC, ...)] | By Edward J. R. In past we have installed Windows CE on a regular PC and Windows Mobile is based on Windows CE, so why not to put Windows Mobile in a netbook? Well, because Windows Mobile runs only on ARM-compatible processors and netbooks use x86-compatible processors! What to do in this situation? Solution: there is another way: to put ARM-compatible processor into netbook (tiny notebook with full-size keyboard and 10-inch display and low price) and then to run Windows Mobile in it! There is a rumor that this is exactly what Apple is planning to do - to run their mobile Mac OS X (used in Phone and in iPod touch) in a netbook form factor... and this is what will happen with Windows Mobile! During Mobile World Congress 2009 one of the biggest chip makers for mobile phones - Qualcomm - informed that their 1GHz ARM-compatible processor - Snapdragon - will be available also in netbooks powered by Windows Mobile! While we haven't seen yet a photo of a netbook with Snapdragon and Windows Mobile in it, clearly it is possible. One concern might be: resolution of the display in Windows Mobile - theoretically maximum resolution is 800x480 but nowadays netbooks are offered with 1024x600 ( WSVGA ) resolution. Practically it will not be a problem because both Redfly and i-mate offer solutions where (externally) Windows Mobile is running in higher resolutions than 800x480. While Microsoft is releasing this year commercially Windows 7 (successor to Windows Vista) that is especially well designed to run smoothly on netbooks, clearly having ARM-compatible processor in a netbook has advantages (longer battery life!). Conclusion: Windows Mobile powered PDAs (not smartphones) are almost extinct and majority of Windows Mobile licenses is used in smartphones... but it may change! Get ready for Windows Mobile netbook - coming soon to an electronics store near you!
