No Windows Mobile app store for Windows Mobile 6.1 April 02, 2009 [General] | By Edward J. R. 3 words: disregard for customers. Microsoft has confirmed in emails to several news sources, that Windows Mobile app store (Marketplace for Windows phones) is not coming to older phones, i.e. those not equipped with Windows Mobile 6.5. There are speculations, that Microsoft makes it up by allowing Windows Mobile 6.5 on weaker hardware configurations, what could mean theoretically that more old Windows Mobile phones will get upgrades to Windows Mobile 6.5 ... but it's all window-dressing (pun intended!) or rather sham because it is not up to Microsoft but up to manufacturers to release updates, and these manufacturers usually prefer to sell new phones with new version of Windows Mobile. Similarly all that talk that "it is not decided yet" etc. is also pure sham. Our advice therefore is as follows: buy only Windows Mobile phones that are powered by Windows Mobile 6.5 (nowadays: none yet) or that have 100% certain promise of upgrade to Windows Mobile (nowadays only: HTC Touch Diamond2, HTC Touch Pro2 and Toshiba TG01). Do not buy any other Windows Mobile phones! Commentary: we think that, apart from an absolute disregard for customers, the reason why Microsoft is not offering app store for older Windows Mobile phones is trivial: laziness. For comparison's sake: iPhone OS 3.0 that is coming in June 2009 will be available not only for current iPhone (iPhone 3G), for new iPhone models (iPhone nano, iPhone Pro) but also for the very old iPhone 2G from 2007.
