Another debacle from Microsoft: Windows Mobile app store not for indie developers May 02, 2009 [General] | By Edward J. R. We have tried to sign up to the Windows Mobile app store as an individual - for testing purposes - and it transpired that unless you have a company, you cannot do it! In other words: while Apple and Google app stores allow for indie developers, who develop software individually (and who created some of the most innovative apps for these 2 platforms), in case of Windows Mobile app store: only companies are allowed! More info: Why it is so? Because Microsoft requires to fill "VAT Identification Number" field! Although Microsoft writes that it is optional (although in this case Microsoft will take 60% of revenue = 30% of standard + 30% for VAT): Provide your Value-Added Tax (VAT) Identification Number to Microsoft valid VAT Identification Number is not strictly required to get paid, although without it you will be charged the VAT. Microsoft also needs your valid VAT Identification Number to send you a hard-copy tax invoice (HCTI), if applicable to your country. ... in reality the application cannot be filled without entering this VAT Identification Number at all!
