Editorial: downfall of Windows Mobile, episode 3: multitouch, where are you? June 25, 2009 [General] | By Edward J. R. Since yesterday, Windows Mobile is the only major smartphone platform that doesn't offer multitouch. What does it mean in practice? It means in practice that not only Windows Mobile is missing out on very much sought-after capacitive display but also that Microsoft is missing out on another feature that has just become standard: multitouch. After Apple iPhone and Palm Pre, now also HTC will offer Android phones with multitouch. And unlike picky Apple (only few operators offer iPhone) and Palm (it is just starting with Palm webOS that has multitouch), HTC will be pushing these Android phones with multitouch to all operators. Furthermore exclusivity for iPhone is expiring in several countries in January 2010 and then also iPhone will be on sale at all operators. No longer multitouch can be considered as "nice to have" or "fancy-schmancy" feature, but it has de facto become a "must have" feature for many users. Multitouch changes everything. There is no doubt about it as it is the only natural way of interaction with touch displays. Everything else is just delusions of fanboys. Normal users want multitouch and want it now. Why not if 3 other platforms have it already? So situation is like this now: many users think, that it is it for Windows Mobile now. Between the iPhone 3GS, Palm Pre and new multitouch Android phone from HTC, why would anyone put up with Windows Mobile 6.5?
