Local Windows Mobile software contest in Hong Kong allegedly co-organized by Microsoft June 26, 2009 [General] | By Edward J. R. This is a local contest not worldwide but apparently anyone is welcome to join although it is not presented at microsoft.com website. Apparently Microsoft MSDN Hong Kong web site will have it covered by next week. The contest is allegedly (no proof yet!) supported by Microsoft Hong Kong and Microsoft Singapore. Generally we are not in favor of contests and awards regarding software, as we believe in free market, and we believe that sales numbers should determine popularity and not some hand-picking. Apart from that, text from the organizer is really suspicious as it lies about Windows Mobile popularity, claiming that it is increasing (which it is not, the contrary is the true) and for God's sake the winners will have privilige (???) to be published on the Windows Mobile app store (i.e. marketplace) - as if these developers need some contest to be published on this store: “Windows Mobile Software & Game Design Contest” Supporting creative industry and generating new jobs Winning projects will be made available for user download on Windows Mobile Marketplace Windows Mobile handsets are becoming more and more popular. The industry is known to be the fastest growing segment in the smart phone market. The growing popularity of Windows Mobile triggers an increasing demand for more creative and entertaining applications. To foster greater creativity among different sectors of the community and encourage development of a greater variety of Windows Mobile applications, Microsoft recently joined hands with The Pocket PC Channel, online media in Hong Kong, and also the Cyberport IncuTrain Centre, to launch the “Windows Mobile Software & Game Design Contest”. Winning applications will be made available for users to download on Windows Mobile Marketplace, the latest service to be rolled-out along with the launch of Windows Mobile 6.5 later this year, bringing in new business opportunities for the creative industry at large. To learn more, visit www.windowsmobilecontest.com/en/. Note: we still have no proof that this contest is really supported by Microsoft and we still think that it is a bit fishy considering the fact that developers can get to the Marketplace app store without the need to participate in any contest, but since we are reporting about Windows Mobile, we have decided to publish it nonetheless, even if we are not too much convinced about sense and genuity of this whole contest.
