New version of HTC TouchFLO 3D leaked but what about HTC Sense for Windows Mobile?
June 28, 2009 [Pocket PC phone] | By Edward J. R.

What is the point of releasing new HTC Touch FLO 3D (code name: "Manila") if it is supposed to be replaced by HTC Sense for Windows Mobile?

Well, we suspect that this whole talk about HTC Sense being available for Windows Mobile should not be taken literally: it means in fact there will be no HTC Sense for Windows Mobile but just some elements of HTC Sense for Google Android will be ported/available also to HTC TouchFLO 3D for Windows Mobile.

Anyway, so what is new in new version? Some highlights:
  • now it is possible to launch programs directly from the main home screen tab and also directly launching calendar is possible from this tab
  • new tab "Footprints" has been added and one can use GeoTags - functionality apparently available in HTC Touch Cruise and older version of HTC TouchFLO but now coming to all Windows Mobile phones from HTC apparently
  • obviously HTC is extending HTC TouchFLO 3D interface to more and more programs and settings/configuration dialogs - so that users see "HTC Black" -style dialogs that are finger-friendly

Commentary: HTC TouchFLO 3D essentially is a home screen plugin that can be switched off, but it has increasingly more and more functionality and HTC will be offering it also for Windows Mobile 6.5 (as it is visible in official ROM upgrade for HTC Touch Diamond2 that leaked last week). HTC TouchFLO started with 2D version and with being essentially just an extension to enable kinetic scrolling without scroll bars, but now it is becoming bigger and bigger. Pity that the trick from Google Android - hacking multi-touch into OS - cannot be repeated with Windows Mobile 6.1 and Windows Mobile 6.5... so the usability of HTC TouchFLO is not so huge as in HTC Sense. Nonetheless it makes Windows Mobile phones from HTC more pleasant to use so it has to be something good...
