Gold version of Skype 3.0 for Windows Mobile released - no longer BETA June 30, 2009 [General] | By Edward J. R. It is nice to see that Skype employee uses the term "Skype 3.0 for Windows Phones" and not "Skype 3.0 for Windows Mobile", when he writes about this new release: It includes two cool new features: SMS and file transfer. Sending SMSs using Skype is a great way to reach friends and family instantly anywhere in the world – Skype’s low rates mean that you won’t have to break the bank to do it. And file transfer lets you send files quickly when you’re on the move. We’ve ironed out the remaining wrinkles since the Beta release, and it’s ready to go. Download it now and give it a whirl. Commentary: Skype is treating Windows Mobile as a major smartphone platform that deserves new version releases as frequently as possible. While we are still not quite satisfied because video calling feature is missing (although Skype does not offer it to any mobile phone platform yet), it is worth noting that unlike Skype for iPhone, it is possible to make Skype calls also over 3G cellular networks like UMTS / HSDPA / CDMA-EVDO. Also the file transfer function makes a lot more sense in Windows Mobile as downloaded files can be accessed by any Windows Mobile app - unlike it is in iPhone where each app has access only to its own files.
