Microsoft releases new version of Microsoft Reader for Windows Mobile September 27, 2009 [Pocket PC phone] | By Edward J. R. Something must be move moving when it comes to Microsoft eBooks situation because Microsoft Reader for Windows Mobile:
... has not been updated for years, but ... ... on September 10, 2009, Microsoft has released new version: Microsoft Reader 2.4.2 for Windows Mobile. We couldn't find what are changes compared to previous version (no release notes!) but Microsoft Reader clearly looks like a revamped one (see screenshot above!). The rumor has it that activation problems are no more in this version. To download latest version, visit download page of Microsoft Reader for Windows Mobile. Note: it is working still only on devices with touchscreen and some sophisticated eBook features available on other platforms, like "continuity of reading" where you can read for example an eBook on PC, on Kindle, on Mac or on mobile device and the place wher you stopped reading is marked in the next device where you open given eBook. Also your notes and bookmarks are portable among devices. Also no ability to browse eBooks from within the reader and many other features of modern eBook readers are missing in Microsoft Reader. It looks like Microsoft Reader is stuck for years and no new innovation is pumped into it. Speaking of eBooks, Microsoft recently has signed cooperation agreement with O'Reilly publisher that offers also eBooks and online bookshelf "Safari Online". Unfortunately it is one-directional agreement where Microsoft Press publications are going to O'Reilly's electronic venues (eBooks, online bookshelf) but unfortunately O'Reilly -published books are not going to Microsoft Reader.
