Editorial: multitouch comes to Windows Mobile via HTC HD2 - but will it be good enough? November 01, 2009 [Pocket PC phone] | By Edward J. R. HTC HD2 goes on sale this month (November 2009) and it is the first Windows Mobile phone with multitouch support, including zooming with pinch gesture. The question is: since Windows Mobile 6.5 does not support multitouch in any form, HTC had to hack support for multitouch on top of the Windows Mobile - but only in some apps. Will such hacked support for multitouch be good enough to convince you to spend additional money to get HD2? This question can be answered in this way: if this what you need is multitouch support in standard applications (Opera Browser, Office Mobile, HTC's picture viewer), then you will be fully satisfied with HD2! But take a look at these screen shots:
This is the most popular (and unlike GoToMyPC available also for free!) service to access your PC remotely: LogMeIn. Since HTC HD2 has huge display (4.3 inch = much bigger than 3.5 inch of iPhone), it is naturally predestined to be used for remote control of PCs. Naturally users of HTC HD2 would like to use multitouch, with comfortable zooming by pinch, also inside of LogMeIn client. But it is not gonna happen! For this to happen LogMeIn would have to have intention to hack into HTC's proprietary solution for the multitouch as Windows Mobile 6.5 does not have an API for multitouch. Conclusion: clearly HTC HD2 is the best Windows Mobile phone on the market (no other phone comes even close to it) and it's the first to bring multitouch to Windows Mobile, but without API for multitouch in current version of Windows Mobile, this multitouch in HD2 will be of limited usage. For comparison's sake: LogMeIn client for iPhone makes it possible to zoom in and out with multitouch gesture - very comfortably with just one single gesture (instead of using 4 taps on the screen needed in Windows Mobile version of this client).
