Due to pathetic 10 MB limit of Windows Marketplace for Mobile - developers find a workaround but it sucks November 09, 2009 [Pocket PC phone] | By Edward J. R. Microsoft's Windows Mobile app store also known as "Windows Marketplace for Mobile" is pathetic and Microsoft employees who made it must be less competent than kindergarten children. Not only it has many issues but also many limitations: apps are being installed only to internal memory, not on SD card and not even on internal 4-8GB memory of some phones like HTC Diamond or Samsung Omnia and there is a limit of size for apps, no matter WiFi or cellular: 10 MB in size. For comparison's sake iPhone can install apps of any size directly from app store, even 1.6 GB big GPS navigation apps like TomTom, and Android (2.0) can install apps also to SD card. We have found however some apps in Windows Marketplace for Mobile that are bigger than 1GB. How do they do it, if there is limit of 10 MB? Here is how: Yes, so the user is buying from the Windows Mobile app store only small part of the app: here only 57 KB big, and then user needs to use cumbersome process with usernames and passwords to fetch proper files: Conclusion: it's unbelievable how lame Windows Marketplace for Mobile is. It sucks big time. We can understand that some issues might be teething problems but forcing users to install to internal memory and 10 MB limit mean: a) your internal memory will be full very quickly and will made the Windows phone unusable, b) no GPS navigation software like CoPilot (that is available very very cheaply for iPhone) and TomTom will ever be posted to the Windows Marketplace for Mobile as long as these 2 problems persist. New version of Windows Marketplace for Mobile will be released by the end of this year (2009) but it will not address these 2 issues (internal memory only, 10 MB limit) but will rather focus on ability to select country and to deliver the app store officially also to Windows Mobile 6 and Windows Mobile 6.1 devices. While several other divisions of Microsoft are extremely successful and bring literally billions of dollars of pure profit a year, Windows Mobile division is so pathetic, that it looks like it is run by preschoolers...
