Windows Marketplace for Mobile has only 520 apps in it, not 800 - a TOTAL FAILURE by now December 20, 2009 [General] | By Edward J. R. On November 1st, 2009, Windows Marketplace for Mobile, i.e. Windows Mobile app store, had only 281 apps for Windows Mobile in it. For comparison's sake: iPhone's app store now has 127,000 apps available and Google Android recently exceeded 20,000 apps. So how many apps are there in Windows Marketplace for Mobile today? For sure it is NOT "800" as some sources claim. These sources claim that Microsoft said it but fail to provide proof for that claim. In other words: they lie. We have counted it today and the number of apps in Marketplace for Windows Mobile is now 520. We have calculated through all categories: 7 + 25 + 30 + 25 + 33 + 202 + 37 + 6 + 14 + 14 + 28 + 14 + 33 + 52 = 520 So in approximately 2 months only 239 apps have been added. For comparison's sake: such number of apps in iPhone app store is added every few hours, and number of apps in iPhone app store grows with speed of 20-30 thousand (!) new apps a month. In other words: this what Windows Mobile achieves in 2 months, iPhone achieves in 2-3 hours. While it is true that there is in total approximately 20,000 Windows Mobile apps that are available outside of Marketplace - from 3rd party online stores like MobiHand and PocketGear, or directly from websites of developers, the fact of the matter is that these apps are difficult to find, to discover and don't offer automatic update feature. The fact is: Windows Mobile app store aka "Windows Marketplace for Mobile" is a travesty. A failure of massive proportions. Note also that in some countries not even 520 apps are visible but only around 80 because Microsoft is not showing English-speaking apps in other countries. Interestingly Google Android has no approval process and new apps and app updates appear immediately in the Android Market (i.e. Android's app store). Apple has strict approval process where both people and software checkers are verifying apps. It looks like Windows Mobile dev team thinks that they are Apple, because they also approve apps, but reality is that they are not even as good as Android, not to mention iPhone. Conclusion: current team developing and running Windows Mobile Marketplace has failed. It's time for Microsoft to replace them with new people and start again.
