DO NOT BUY Windows Phone cellphones - says major European carrier February 24, 2010 [General] | By Edward J. R. Once again somebody is saying how it is and we like it! Here a European carrier - Orange UK - is saying that Windows Mobile 6.x renamed to Windows Phone Classic is not enough to convince enterprise mobility customers, that Windows Mobile is a viable option in long-term! Note that Brit-speak is full of understatements, so the phrase "should exercise caution" means "should avoid in all situations": It has been suggested that the current version of Windows Mobile, Windows Mobile 6.5, will live-on as Windows Phone Classic, in order to address customer bases including existing corporate WM users. However, with Microsoft's future clearly pegged to the consumer-oriented Windows Phone 7, it is unclear how long the second-tier platform will continue to be supported, and certainly device manufacturers may find little incentive to commit further resources to developing products for an operating system that appears to be a dead-end in evolutionary terms. What enterprises really need from Microsoft now is clarity with regard to its future device platform activities from a business viewpoint. What is clear is that there are plenty of alternatives to Windows Mobile, and that enterprise users should exercise caution in committing further resources to this operating system -- certainly until Microsoft clarifies its long-term strategy for enterprise mobility.
